FallTech 7021FD Journeyman Flex Climbing Harness with Sternal D-Ring

CSA Z259.10-2018 Class A, L
Key Specifications Dorsal + Sternal D-Rings Class L (Ladder Climbing) Steel Hardware Sizes S–XL

The FallTech 7021FD Journeyman Flex adds a sternal (chest-front) D-ring to the base 7021 platform for ladder-climbing and cable fall arrester systems. When your access route requires a ladder-safety cable (e.g., fixed vertical ladders on telecom towers, wind turbines, water towers, or industrial stacks), the sternal D-ring is the proper connection point. CSA Z259.10-2018 Class A, L certified.

Overview

The 7021FD is the 7021 with an added sternal D-ring positioned at the chest. The sternal attachment is used with vertical cable fall arresters (ladder safety systems) or for front-of-body SRL connection during certain climbing scenarios. The dorsal D-ring remains the primary fall arrest attachment for general work at height; the sternal D-ring activates only when climbing fixed ladders or using a front-mounted trailing fall arrester. Steel hardware, mating-buckle chest, tongue-buckle legs. CSA Z259.10-2018 Class A, L and ANSI Z359.11-2014 certified.

Key Features

Sternal D-Ring (Class L)

Front-of-chest D-ring rated for ladder-climbing attachment with cable or rope fall arresters. Activates the proper fall arrest geometry when climbing vertically.

Dorsal D-Ring (Class A)

Standard rear dorsal D-ring for general fall arrest from overhead tie-off. The 7021FD does not compromise dorsal fall arrest capability.

Integrated Dorsal SRL Sleeve

Built-in routing sleeve for personal SRL attachment at the dorsal D-ring.

Steel Hardware Throughout

Steel D-rings and steel spring-tension torso rollers. Durable, proven, cost-effective.

Mating Buckle Chest + Tongue Leg Buckles

Traditional tongue-buckle style for a dialled-in fit through the full size range.

Ergonomic Padding

Shoulder yoke and leg pads contoured for reduced pressure during climbing and active work.

CSA Certification Details

CSA Z259.10-2018 Class A, L — Fall Arrest + Ladder Climbing

Class A for dorsal fall arrest from overhead tie-off. Class L for sternal attachment during ladder climbing with a cable or rope fall arrester. The sternal D-ring is only rated for climbing — never use it for general fall arrest from an overhead anchor. Meets all Canadian provincial OHS requirements for climbing-capable harnesses.

Applications

  • Fixed vertical ladders with cable safety systems
  • Water tower and stack access
  • Communication and telecom tower entry ladders
  • Wind turbine ladder climbs
  • Industrial silo and bin ladders
  • Any application requiring sternal-mounted trailing fall arrester

How to Choose the Right Harness

The 7021FD is for workers who climb fixed ladders with cable or rope fall-arrester systems. For general fall arrest without climbing, the FallTech 7021 is the same harness without the sternal D-ring at a lower price. For quick-connect buckles on a climbing harness, the FallTech 7021QCFD is the QC version. For full three-D-ring climbing (Cross-Over) on tower work, look at the FallTech 7028 Cross-Over.

Compliance & Standards

Primary: CSA Z259.10-2018 Class A, L

Also Certified: ANSI Z359.11-2014

Provincial Coverage: Meets all Canadian provincial and territorial OHS requirements for climbing-capable harnesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the sternal D-ring for general fall arrest?
No. Sternal D-rings are Class L — climbing only, with limited free-fall distance (typically <2 ft). Using a sternal D-ring for general fall arrest from an overhead anchor can cause serious internal injury during an arrest event because of the incorrect load geometry. Use the dorsal D-ring for overhead fall arrest.
What cable fall arresters work with this harness?
Any CSA-certified cable or rope fall arrester designed for attachment to a harness sternal D-ring. Common systems include trailing fall arresters on pre-rigged vertical cable lifelines. Contact us for compatible cable-climb system recommendations.
Do I need the sternal D-ring if I only climb ladders occasionally?
If your ladder is short and unrated for cable systems, a standard 1D harness is typically sufficient. But any fixed vertical ladder with a pre-installed cable safety system requires a sternal-D-ring harness to connect properly. Check your site's fall protection plan and the ladder's installed safety system.
Can I switch between sternal and dorsal attachment during a climb?
Yes — and this is standard procedure. You climb the ladder attached to the sternal D-ring on a cable fall arrester, then transition to dorsal attachment (via SRL or lanyard) once at the work platform. Never climb the ladder attached dorsally through an overhead tie-off.
