Buyer's Guide
What's in a Fall Protection Kit?
A fall protection kit bundles the three components required for a legally compliant fall arrest system in Canada: a roof anchor, a connecting subsystem (lanyard or self-retracting lifeline), and a full-body harness. Under CSA Z259 and provincial OHS codes — including Ontario's O. Reg. 213/91, BC's WorkSafeBC Part 11, and Alberta's OHS Code Part 9 — each component must be individually CSA-certified and compatible with the others.
Buying a kit ensures component compatibility and compliance. Mixing components from different manufacturers or certification years can create compliance gaps that expose your crew and your business to serious liability.
Canadian Regulation Reminder: Fall protection is required on Ontario construction sites when a worker is exposed to a fall of 3 metres (10 ft) or more, or any distance onto hazardous equipment. Roofing on pitches steeper than 1:3 may require protection regardless of height. Check your province's OHS code for jurisdiction-specific thresholds.
Roof Fall Protection: Matching the Kit to Your Roof Type
Choosing the wrong roof anchor for your substrate is one of the most common compliance failures on Canadian jobsites. The kits stocked at Fall Protection Canada are pre-matched to their approved substrates so your crew isn't guessing on site.
- Shingle roofs — Use screw-down temporary anchors or permanent D-ring anchors installed through the sheathing and into the rafters
- Standing seam metal roofs — Use clamp-style anchors that engage the raised seam without drilling; never penetrate a standing seam panel
- Corrugated / R-Panel metal roofs — Use structural screw-down anchors designed for ribbed profiles
- Flat / low-slope roofs — Permanent engineered anchors or portable weighted systems; travel restraint lanyards often appropriate where perimeter guards are in place
Roof Anchors: Temporary vs. Permanent
Temporary roof anchors are installed before each job and removed afterward — the standard for residential roofing contractors. Permanent roof anchors are engineered, installed once, and remain on the structure for ongoing maintenance access. They are a legal requirement on many commercial and industrial buildings.
At Fall Protection Canada, we stock permanent roof anchors for fall protection including engineered D-ring systems for shingle and metal applications, as well as complete temporary anchor kits for roofing contractors across Canada.
Safety Harnesses in a Fall Protection Kit
Every fall protection kit includes a full-body harness rated under CSA Z259.10. For most roofing and construction applications, a Class A harness with a dorsal back D-ring is the correct choice. A body belt alone does not meet fall arrest requirements in Canada. Harnesses must be inspected before each use and formally inspected by a competent person at least annually.
Fall Restraint Lanyard vs. Shock-Absorbing Lanyard
A fall restraint lanyard prevents a worker from reaching the fall hazard — it is not designed to arrest a fall. A shock-absorbing lanyard deploys a tear-webbing pack limiting arrest forces to 6 kN per CSA Z259.11, and is required whenever there is any possibility the worker could fall.
