Rooftop hazards on HVAC service calls
EDGES · OPENINGS · ACCESS
- Edges: stay behind a guardrail or parapet where there is one; where there isn't, tie off before you work near the edge. Check your province's trigger height on its province page: several provinces also require protection below 3 m when the landing is hazardous.
- Skylights and hatches: treat them as openings. Most provinces require openings to be guarded or covered regardless of height.
- Ladders: secure the ladder, extend it about 1 m above the roof edge, and keep three points of contact. Haul tools up by rope or bag instead of carrying them.

HARNESS · CONNECTOR · ANCHOR
- Full-body harness with a back D-ring, fitted properly (harness guide).
- Connector: a personal SRL for short arrest distance, leading-edge rated if the anchor is at foot level.
- Anchor that suits the roof: a parapet clamp for commercial flat roofs with a parapet, concrete or steel anchors for decks and structure, beam anchors for exposed steel, and a roof anchor for pitched residential roofs.
- Suspension trauma straps and a way to get a worker down (rescue kits).
Never tie off to a rooftop unit, vent, conduit or drain: they are not rated anchors.
Working alone and rescue
PLAN IT BEFORE YOU CLIMB
A worker hanging in a harness needs to be reached quickly. Before going up alone:
- set a check-in time with the office or a buddy, and what happens if it is missed;
- know how a suspended worker would be brought down, and whether the fire department has been contacted and can respond in time;
- keep the rescue gear and trauma straps on you, not in the van.
Most provinces require written rescue procedures before fall arrest is used, and several have working-alone rules too. Check your province page.
