How do I choose a fall protection system?

The A-B-C of fall arrest

A — Anchorage

The fixed point you tie off to, rated for the arrest load your province requires per worker. The surface decides the anchor: standing seam, shingle, screw-down metal, concrete or steel.

B — Body wear

A full-body harness spreads arrest forces across the thighs, pelvis and shoulders. A back (dorsal) D-ring is standard for fall arrest; side, chest and shoulder D-rings add positioning, climbing and rescue.

C — Connector

A shock-absorbing lanyard or a self-retracting lifeline links harness to anchor. The clearance below you decides which — tight clearance or a leading edge points to an SRL. Not sure? Build my system.

Fall protection equipment — common questions

Answers you can cite

01

What equipment makes up a personal fall arrest system?

Three parts working together: an anchorage, a full-body harness and a connector — a shock-absorbing lanyard or a self-retracting lifeline. Each has to suit the job: the anchor matches the roof or structure, and the connector matches the fall clearance below you. The system builder matches all three in a couple of minutes.

02

Do I need CSA or ANSI certified fall protection in Canada?

Provincial OHS regulations generally reference CSA Z259 standards, and many sites require CSA-certified equipment. Some ANSI Z359 / OSHA-rated equipment may be accepted depending on your province and site rules. Every product page states the actual certification — check it against your jurisdiction, or call 437-475-2066 and we'll help.

03

Should I use a lanyard or a self-retracting lifeline?

It comes down to fall clearance. A 6 ft shock-absorbing lanyard needs a lot of clear space below the anchor to arrest a fall. With limited clearance, at a leading edge, or when in doubt, a self-retracting lifeline locks faster and shortens the fall. Compare both in SRLs vs Lanyards.
