Metal Roof Fall Protection: Choosing the Right System

Metal roofs are slippery, often steep, and come in very different profiles. Here is how to match the anchor to the roof, build the rest of the system around it, and plan for Canadian ice and snow.

Quick answerRaised vertical seams with no exposed screws: use a non-penetrating standing seam clamp anchor. Exposed-fastener panels (R-panel, corrugated, ribbed): use a screw-down anchor fastened into a purlin. Metal shingles or stone-coated steel: use an anchor the roofing maker allows. Then add a harness and an SRL or lanyard sized to your clearance.

Standing seam metal roofs

NON-PENETRATING CLAMP ANCHORS

Standing seam roofs have raised vertical seams and hidden fasteners. A clamp-on anchor grips the seam, so the panel is never drilled and the roof warranty and weather seal stay intact.

  • Match the anchor to the seam profile and height (the product page lists the seams it fits).
  • Clamp anchors rely on the seam and the panel attachment: follow the maker's instructions for seam type and spacing.
  • The SSRA1 is a common choice; it is rated to ANSI/OSHA (5,000 lb tests, ISO 17025 lab), not CSA.

SCREW-DOWN ANCHORS

Exposed-fastener roofs are held down by visible screws, so a screw-down anchor is the right fit. It must land on a purlin or solid structure, not just the thin panel skin, with the maker's fastener type, count and pattern, and the penetrations sealed.

HARNESS · CONNECTOR · CLEARANCE · WEATHER

  • Harness: a full-body harness with a back D-ring. See the harness guide.
  • Connector: metal roofs are often low-clearance near the eaves, so an SRL usually beats a lanyard. Use a leading-edge SRL if the anchor is at foot level.
  • Several workers: a horizontal lifeline rated for the number of users.
  • Weather: frost, ice and snow make metal roofs far more slippery. Clear access routes, and expect snow to slide off without warning.
  • Rescue: plan how you will reach a suspended worker before anyone goes up. Most provinces require a written procedure; check your province page.

Metal roof fall protection questions

ANSWERS YOU CAN CITE

01

Do standing seam anchors damage the roof?

No. They clamp to the raised seam with no drilling, so the panel and its weather seal stay intact. Follow the maker's seam and spacing limits.
02

Can I use a standing seam clamp on an R-panel roof?

No. R-panel and corrugated roofs have no raised seam to clamp. Use a screw-down anchor fastened into a purlin.
03

Is the SSRA1 CSA certified?

No. The SSRA1 is ANSI/OSHA rated: 5,000 lb tests, ISO 17025 lab. Check what your province and site accept.
04

Lanyard or SRL on a metal roof?

Usually an SRL. Clearance near the eaves is often too short for a lanyard's free fall and absorber deployment.
