The FallTech Contractor Leading Edge series is the cable SRL built for the job most SRLs are not rated for: tying off at or below your feet, with a sharp edge between you and the anchor. Available in 20-foot, 30-foot and 50-foot lengths, in both ANSI and CSA-certified versions, every model runs 7/32" galvanized steel cable through an integrated external ViewPack® energy absorber — the combination that makes leading-edge use possible.

The 20-foot model is offered in the ANSI configuration only. If your site specification calls for a CSA-marked device, choose the 30' or 50' C-prefix model.

Overview

Standard SRLs are built on one assumption: the anchor is above you and the cable runs clean. Leading-edge work breaks both. On a deck edge, an open floor, or a steel erection job, the anchor is often at foot level and the lifeline drags across a sharp corner during the fall. That geometry produces a longer free fall and puts a cutting load on the cable at the worst possible moment.

The Contractor LE series is designed for exactly that. The 7/32" galvanized steel cable is heavier than the 3/16" cable on standard Contractor SRLs, adding cut resistance where the lifeline crosses the edge. The external ViewPack® energy absorber sits in line with the lifeline, taking the extra force generated by the longer free fall and keeping arrest forces inside ANSI limits. The result is a device certified to ANSI Z359.14-2021 Class 2 — rated for anchorage from overhead down to five feet below your dorsal D-ring.

Beyond the leading-edge rating, this is the same workhorse platform Canadian crews already know: glass-filled nylon housing over an independent alloy steel frame, an internal inertial brake, a load-indicating connector at the user end, and an anchorage carabiner in the box.

What "Leading Edge" Actually Means

A leading-edge or Class 2 SRL (SRL-LE) is certified for use where the anchorage may sit below the level of your dorsal D-ring — down to 5 feet below it — and where the lifeline may contact an edge during a fall. Standard Class 1 SRLs are certified for overhead anchorage only.

Two things make the difference: an energy absorber in the lifeline to handle the higher forces from a longer free fall, and a cut-resistant lifeline tested against a defined edge. A Class 1 SRL used at foot level is being used outside its certification, regardless of how strong the cable is.

Class 2 permits free fall up to 6 feet (1.8 m), which means your required fall clearance is greater than with an overhead-anchored Class 1 device. Always calculate clearance for your actual anchor position before the first tie-off.

Foot-Level Anchorage Rated

Class 2 certification covers anchor points from overhead down to 5 feet below the dorsal D-ring. Tie off to the deck, a beam at your feet, or a floor-level anchor without stepping outside the device's rating.

Load-Indicating Connector

The user-end swivel connector carries a load indicator that becomes visible once the device has arrested a fall. A supervisor can spot a used device at a glance — though it never replaces a full post-fall inspection.

Internal Inertial Brake

Centrifugal brake engages on rapid payout for positive, uniform deceleration. The cable pays out and retracts smoothly through normal movement, so crews aren't fighting the device all shift.

Anchorage Carabiner Included

Plated alloy steel carabiner rated 5,000 lb tensile / 3,600 lb gate ships with every unit. One part number gets a complete, ready-to-hang device to the jobsite.

The 2021 revision replaced the old Class A / Class B system with Class 1 and Class 2. Class 1 devices are certified for overhead anchorage only. Class 2 devices — this series — are certified for anchorage from overhead down to 5 feet below the dorsal D-ring, must include an energy absorber in the lifeline, and are tested for leading-edge use. Maximum arrest force is capped at 1,800 lb (8 kN) with an average arrest force limit of 1,350 lb and a maximum arrest distance of 42 inches.

CSA Z259.2.2-17 (R2022) — C727630LE, C727650LE

The C-prefix models are certified to CSA Z259.2.2, the Canadian standard governing self-retracting devices, and ship with bilingual English/French instructions. If your site specification, prime contractor, or provincial inspector requires CSA-marked equipment, these are the models to order. All Canadian provincial OHS codes — Ontario O. Reg. 213/91, Alberta OHS Code Part 9, BC OHS Regulation Part 11, and Quebec CNESST — recognize CSA Z259.2.2 self-retracting devices as compliant fall arrest equipment.

How to Choose Length and Certification

Start with length. Measure the distance from your anchor point to the furthest point you need to reach, then add slack for movement. Twenty feet suits tight work zones and close anchors, and gives you the lightest device in the series. Thirty feet is the everyday choice and covers most commercial roof spans without repositioning the anchor. Fifty feet is for large-span roofs and widely spaced anchor points — the extra reach costs you a heavier device to carry up.

Then pick the certification. Functionally the ANSI and CSA versions are the same device. Order the C-prefix model when your site specification, prime contractor, or provincial inspector requires CSA-marked equipment, or when you want bilingual instructions on site. Otherwise the ANSI model is the standard stocking item. Note that the 20-foot length is available in ANSI only.

Confirm you need leading edge at all. If your anchor is always overhead and the lifeline never contacts an edge, a standard Class 1 cable SRL is lighter and less expensive. Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the ANSI and CSA versions?
The hardware is the same device. The C-prefix models are certified and marked to CSA Z259.2.2-17 and ship with bilingual English/French instructions for Canadian use. Order CSA when your site specification or provincial inspector calls for CSA-marked equipment; otherwise either will do the job. Both carry the same leading-edge rating and the same capacity.
Why is there no CSA version of the 20-foot model?
FallTech offers the CSA configuration in the 30' and 50' lengths only. If you need a 20-foot working length with a CSA mark, talk to us — we can look at other CSA-certified short-length SRLs rather than have you order a device that won't pass a site audit.
Can I use a standard SRL at foot level if the cable is strong enough?
No. Cable strength isn't the issue — free fall distance and edge contact are. A Class 1 SRL anchored below the dorsal D-ring allows a longer free fall than it was tested for, generating higher arrest forces, and its lifeline hasn't been edge-tested. Using one that way puts you outside the device's certification and outside your OHS obligations. That's the whole reason the LE series exists.
How much fall clearance do I need?
More than with an overhead-anchored SRL, and it depends on where your anchor sits relative to your D-ring. The ViewPack energy absorber carries a printed clearance chart for exactly this reason. Work out clearance for your actual anchor position before the first tie-off — the further below your D-ring the anchor sits, the more room you need below.
What does the load-indicating connector do?
The user-end connector carries an indicator that becomes visible once the device has taken a fall-arrest load, so a used device can be spotted during a walk-around. Treat it as a first checkpoint, not a verdict — any device suspected of arresting a fall must be removed from service and inspected regardless of what the indicator shows.
What happens if the cable gets cut or damaged?
Remove the device from service immediately. The 7/32" galvanized cable is more cut-resistant than standard 3/16" lifeline, but "cut-resistant" is not "cut-proof" — sharp metal edges, rebar, and angle iron can still damage it. Inspect the full length of cable for kinks, broken strands, birdcaging, and corrosion before every use.
What maintenance does a cable SRL need?
Visual inspection before every use: cable condition, connector function, housing damage, and an intact energy absorber. Wipe the cable dry after wet weather to keep rust off. Let the cable retract under control rather than releasing it. After any fall arrest, or if the energy absorber shows any sign of deployment, the device goes out of service pending inspection.
